History

History of the Senior Center

In 1964, local leaders Vince and Lou (Sherry) Ecarius began the Adult Activity Club, which met in the basement of Munson Medical Center. In 1969 the club moved to our present location.

When Vince and Lou "retired' in 1978, the City of Traverse City took over responsibility for the club, and hired the 1st paid Director, Joyce Stortz. Today, a full staff and over 100 volunteers operate all programs and activities.

Programs

Dances, cards and social clubs have been in place since the beginning. New programs and activities have been added since 1978, providing local seniors with more than 100 programs annually. Some examples of the many additions are various classes, special events, sports programs, a computer lab, exercise programs, and a travel club.
Shuffleboard
Originally, the grounds were dedicated to shuffleboard and our shuffleboard courts are the first ones built in the State of Michigan.  In the past, state and national tournaments were held here. For the comfort of the shuffleboarders, a shelter was built where the Senior Center is now, and over the years the shelter was improved and built up and built on to, and the result is the Senior Center we use today.
