History of the Dispatch Center

Grand Traverse Central Dispatch was formed in 1977.  There wasn’t 911 in 1977, but only a 7-digit telephone number that was designated the emergency number for Grand Traverse County.

Our enhanced 911 system took effect in April 1991, so not only were the citizens able to use an easy 3-digit number, but pertinent information would display automatically in the dispatch center. This information includes the registered telephone’s address and telephone number information.

Central Dispatch entered a new era of public safety technology in 2015, with the deployment of a Next Generation 911 Phone system (NG911). This system helped dispatch keep up with the rapid evolution of mobile telecommunication.
