Criminal Division

Responsibilities
The Criminal Division is responsible for processing paperwork filed by the police departments, state law and local ordinance prosecutors. Cases generally involve misdemeanor offenses, both traffic and non-traffic.

In addition, this division is responsible for processing felony offenses for which the maximum penalty exceeds 1 year in jail. These offenses are authorized only by the county prosecutor and must be scheduled for preliminary examination.

The preliminary examination would decide if there is enough evidence to support that the defendant committed the offense, in which case, the matter would be transferred to Circuit Court for trial.
