Our April theme is “A Grand Place to Be Green.” Spring cleaning and Earth Day invite us to reflect on our impact and take meaningful steps toward sustainability, while upcoming RecycleSmart events offer the perfect opportunity to declutter with purpose. Being environmentally conscious isn’t just responsible—it’s forward-thinking! Join RecycleSmart, our Resource Recovery Program, in finding new ways to make life more sustainable in Grand Traverse County!

Spring is just around the corner and our Resource Recovery Department is here to help you with your Spring cleaning. Mark your calendars for these upcoming events:
April 10: Household Hazardous Waste Drop Off, Call 231-362-5162 to Sign Up!
April 15: Brush Drop Off Site Opens for the Season.
April 22: Earth Day!
April 26: Makerfest at the Civic Center from 10am-2pm.
May 4-10: International Compost Awareness Week

Household Hazardous Waste & Pesticide Collection (Grand Traverse County Residents Only): Thursday, April 10 from 1pm - 6pm. Sign up opens March 10!
Brush Drop-Off: The brush site will open for the 2025 season on April 15th. The site will be closed if there is 4 or more inches of snow on the ground. Be aware that the conditions at the site can be difficult for non all-wheel drive vehicles when there is any standing water.
Makerfest: A Special Earth Day Edition of MakerFest in partnership with Grand Traverse County RecycleSmart! This year we'll have our annual celebration of Making and all things STEAM, PLUS lots of additional great activities and information related to Earth Day. Find all the fun indoors(!) - and perhaps some outdoors. Join us at the Grand Traverse County Civic Center on April 26th from 10 AM - 2 PM.
International Compost Awareness Week: International Compost Awareness Week (ICAW) is the largest and most comprehensive education initiative of the compost industry. It is celebrated during the first full week of May throughout the US and internationally. The goal of ICAW is to work together to raise public awareness on why we all should be composting our organics and using compost to create healthier soil.

Spring Garden Prep:
MSU Extension is a valuable resource to Grand Traverse County and they focus on providing successful information and resources about vegetable gardening, to anyone of any level. Whether you are new to gardening or a veteran, their vegetable gardening tip sheet will help you be successful from planting to harvest. Check out their “How to Grow” series in their Resources section for more information on growing specific vegetables.

Recess Event on April 2nd:
Recess is an afterwork networking event for business professionals in Grand Traverse County. Recess 2025 is brought to you by us. Our theme this year is “Grand Traverse County: A grand place to live, work and play.” At each Recess we will be delivering Public Service Announcements relevant to what’s going on in the county that month.
In April our mini theme is “A Grand Place to Be Green” and Lydia Gulow, our Resource Recovery Director, will be delivering messaging on recycling and best sustainability practices in Grand Traverse County.
Recess will be at the Bushnell’s in Traverse City on April 2nd from 5pm-7pm with a $10 cover charge. Enjoy hors d'oeuvres, beverages and prizes while mingling with your peers and friends!
